Newt and crew disgust me but why are we (progressives/left) helping the right select their candidate?

Let then come up with whatever ______ed, _______ed, _____ed, and out of touch candidate they ignorantly think is suitable and then let him (or her) get crushed by the vote.

Why do we have to tell them their candidate is bigoted, lacks knowledge a President will need, or is just too far removed from reality? The right's leadership's constant lies have finally and obviously twisted their view of reality to where they can't even produce a viable candidate.

Screw 'em-let 'em figure out out at the polls.

The Winter of Our Occupation ...a proposal from Michael Moore

Friends,

And now it is winter. Wall Street rejoices, hoping that the change of seasons will mean a change in our spirit, our commitment to stop them.

They couldn't be more wrong. Have they not heard of Washington and the troops at Valley Forge? The Great Flint Sit-Down Strike in the winter of 1936-37? The Michigan Wolverines crushing Ohio State in the 1950 Blizzard Bowl? When it comes to winter, it is the time historically when the people persevere and the forces of evil make their retreat!

We are not even 12 weeks old, yet Occupy Wall Street has grown so fast, so big, none of us can keep up with the hundreds of towns who have joined the movement, or the thousands of actions -- some of them just simple ones in neighborhoods, schools and organizations -- that have happened. The national conversation has been irreversibly changed. Now everyone is talking about how the 1% are getting away with all the money while the 99% struggle to make ends meet. People are no longer paralyzed by despair or apathy. Most know that now is the time to reclaim our country from the bankers, the lobbyists -- and their gofers: the members of the United States Congress and the 50 state legislatures.

And they're crazy if they think that a little climate chaos (otherwise known as winter in the 21st century) that they've helped to bring about is going to stop us.

I would like to propose to my Occupying sisters and brothers that there are many ways to keep Occupy Wall Street going through the winter months. There is perhaps no better time to move the movement indoors for a few months -- and watch it grow even bigger! (For those who have the stamina to maintain the outdoor occupations, by all means, keep it up -- and the rest of us will do our best to help you and keep you warm!)

The winter gives us an amazing opportunity to expand our actions against the captains of capitalism who have occupied our homes with their fraudulent mortgage system which has tossed millions of families out onto the curb; a cruel health care system that has told 50 million Americans "if you can't afford a doctor, go F yourself"; a student loan system that sends 22-year-olds into an immediate "debtors' prison" of working lousy jobs for which they didn't go to school but now have to take because they're in hock for tens of thousands of dollars for the next two decades; and a jobs market that keeps 25 million Americans un- or under-employed -- and much of the rest of the workers forced to accept wage cuts, health care reductions and zero job security.

But we in the Occupy Movement reject this version of the "American Dream." Instead, I suggest we shift our focus for this winter to the following actions:

OCCUPY THE WINTER

A proposal to the General Assembly of Occupy Wall Street from Michael Moore

1. Occupy Our Homes. Sorry, banks, a roof over one's head is a human right, and you will no longer occupy our homes through foreclosure and eviction because well, you see, they are our homes, not yours. You may hold the mortgage; you don't hold the right to throw us or our neighbors out into the cold. With almost one in three home mortgages currently in foreclosure, nearing foreclosure or "underwater," the Occupy Movement must form local "Occupy Strike Forces" to create human shields when the banks come to throw people out of their homes. If the foreclosure has already happened, then we must help families move back into their foreclosed homes -- literally (see this clip from my last film to watch how a home re-occupation is accomplished). Beginning today, Take Back the Land, plus many other citizens' organizations nationwide, are kicking off Occupy Our Homes. Numerous actions throughout the day today have already resulted in many families physically taking back their homes. This will continue every day until the banks are forced to stop their fraudulent practices, until homeowners are allowed to change their mortgage so that it reflects the true value of their homes, and until those who can no longer afford a mortgage are allowed to stay in their homes and pay rent. I beseech the news media to cover these actions -- they are happening everywhere. Evictions, though rarely covered (you need a Kardashian in your home as you're being evicted to qualify for news coverage) are not a new story (see this scene I filmed in 1988). Also, please remember the words of Congresswoman Marcy Kaptur of Toledo (in 'Capitalism: A Love Story'): Do not leave your homes if the bank forecloses on you! Let them take you to court and then YOU ask the judge to make them produce a copy of your mortgage. They can't. It was chopped up a hundred different ways, bundled with a hundred other mortgages, and sold off to the Chinese. If they can't produce the mortgage, they can't evict you.

2. Occupy Your College. In nearly every other democracy on the planet, students go to college for free or almost free. Why do those countries do that? Because they know that for their society to advance, they must have an educated population. Without that, productivity, innovation and an informed electorate is stunted and everyone suffers as a result. Here's how we do it in the U.S.A.: make education one of our lowest priorities, graduate students who know little about the world or their own government or the economy, and then force them into crushing debt before they even have their first job. That way has really worked well for us, hasn't it? It's made us the world leader in … in … well, ok, we're like 27th or 34th in everything now (except war). This has to end. Students should spend this winter doing what they are already doing on dozens of campuses -- holding sit-ins, occupying the student loan office, nonviolently disrupting the university regents meetings, and pitching their tents on the administration's lawn. Young people -- we, the '60s generation, promised to create a better world for you. We got halfway there -- now you have to complete the job. Do not stop until these wars are ended, the Pentagon budget is cut in half, and the rich are forced to pay their taxes. And demand that that money go to your education. We'll be there with you on all of this! And when we get this fixed and you graduate, instead of being $40,000 in debt, go see the friggin' world, or tinker around in your garage a la the two Steves, or start a band. Enjoy life, discover, explore, experiment, find your way. Anything but the assistant manager at Taco Bell.

3. Occupy Your Job. Let's spend the winter organizing workplaces into unions. OR, if you already have a union, demand that your leaders get off their ass and get aggressive like our grandparents did. For chrissakes, surely you know we would not have a middle class if it weren't for the strikes of the 1930s-1950s?! In three weeks we will celebrate the 75th anniversary of the workers in my hometown of Flint, Michigan taking over and occupying the General Motors factories for 44 days in the dead of winter. Their actions ignited a labor movement that lifted tens of millions out of poverty and into the middle class. It's time to do it again. (According to the Census Bureau and the New York Times, 100 million Americans either live in or near poverty. Disgraceful. Greed has destroyed the core fabric of our communities. Enough!) Here are two good unions to get your fellow workers to sign up and join: UE and SEIU. The CWA are also good. Here's how to get a quick primer in organizing your place of employment (don't forget to be careful while you do this!). If your company is threatening to close down and move the jobs elsewhere, then it's time to occupy the workplace (again, you can get a lesson in how to successfully occupy your factory from my movie).

4. Occupy Your Bank. This is an easy one. Just leave them. Move your checking and your credit card to a nonprofit credit union. It's safe and the decisions made there aren't based on greed. And if a bank tries to evict your neighbor, Occupy the local branch with 20 other people and call the press. Post it on the internet.

5. Occupy the Insurance Man. It's time to not only stand up for the 50 million without health insurance but to also issue a single, simple demand: The elimination of for-profit, privately-controlled health insurance companies. It is nothing short of barbaric to allow businesses to make a profit off people when they get sick. We don't allow anyone to make a profit when we need the fire department or the police. Until recently we would never allow a company to make a profit by operating in a public school. The same should be true for when you need to see a doctor or stay in the hospital. So I say it's long overdue for us to go and Occupy Humana, United Health, Cigna and even the supposed "nonprofit" Blue Crosses. An action on their lawns, in their lobbies, or at the for-profit hospitals -- this is what is needed.

STROKE: Remember the First Three Letters: S, T, R

STROKE IDENTIFICATION:

During a BBQ, a woman stumbled and took a little fall. She assured everyone (who offered to call paramedics) that she was fine; said she had just tripped over a brick because of her new shoes. They got her cleaned up and got her a new plate of food. While she appeared a bit shaken, Jane went about enjoying herself the rest of the evening.

Jane's husband called later telling everyone that his wife had been taken to the hospital -- at 6:00 p.m. Jane had passed away. She had suffered a stroke at the BBQ. Had they known how to identify the signs of a stroke, perhaps Jane would be with us today. Some don't die; they end up in a helpless, hopeless condition instead.

A neurologist says that if he can get to a stroke victim within three hours, he can totally reverse the effects of a stroke . . . totally. He said the trick was getting a stroke recognized, diagnosed, and then getting the patient medically cared for within three hours, which is tough.

RECOGNIZING A STROKE

Thank God for the sense to remember the three steps: S, T, R. Read and Learn!

Sometimes symptoms of a stroke are difficult to identify. Unfortunately, the lack of awareness spells disaster. The stroke victim may suffer severe brain damage when people nearby fail to recognize the symptoms of a stroke. Now doctors say a bystander can recognize a stroke by asking three simple questions:

S *Ask the individual to SMILE.

T *Ask the person to TALK and SPEAK A SIMPLE SENTENCE (coherently), i.e. "It is sunny out today."

R *Ask him or her to RAISE BOTH ARMS.

If he or she has trouble with any ONE of these tasks, call 9-1-1 immediately and describe the symptoms to the dispatcher.

New Sign of a Stroke: Stick Out Your Tongue. NOTE: Another sign of a stroke is this: Ask the person to stick out his tongue. If the tongue is crooked, if it goes to one side or the other, that is also an indication of a stroke.

30 Years Ago Today: The Day the Middle Class Died ...a letter from Michael Moore

Friends,

From time to time, someone under 30 will ask me, "When did this all begin, America's downward slide?" They say they've heard of a time when working people could raise a family and send the kids to college on just one parent's income (and that college in states like California and New York was almost free). That anyone who wanted a decent paying job could get one. That people only worked five days a week, eight hours a day, got the whole weekend off and had a paid vacation every summer. That many jobs were union jobs, from baggers at the grocery store to the guy painting your house, and this meant that no matter how "lowly" your job was you had guarantees of a pension, occasional raises, health insurance and someone to stick up for you if you were unfairly treated.

Young people have heard of this mythical time -- but it was no myth, it was real. And when they ask, "When did this all end?", I say, "It ended on this day: August 5th, 1981."

Beginning on this date, 30 years ago, Big Business and the Right Wing decided to "go for it" -- to see if they could actually destroy the middle class so that they could become richer themselves.

And they've succeeded.

On August 5, 1981, President Ronald Reagan fired every member of the air traffic controllers union (PATCO) who'd defied his order to return to work and declared their union illegal. They had been on strike for just two days.

It was a bold and brash move. No one had ever tried it. What made it even bolder was that PATCO was one of only three unions that had endorsed Reagan for president! It sent a shock wave through workers across the country. If he would do this to the people who were with him, what would he do to us?

Reagan had been backed by Wall Street in his run for the White House and they, along with right-wing Christians, wanted to restructure America and turn back the tide that President Franklin D. Roosevelt started -- a tide that was intended to make life better for the average working person. The rich hated paying better wages and providing benefits. They hated paying taxes even more. And they despised unions. The right-wing Christians hated anything that sounded like socialism or holding out a helping hand to minorities or women.

Reagan promised to end all that. So when the air traffic controllers went on strike, he seized the moment. In getting rid of every single last one of them and outlawing their union, he sent a clear and strong message: The days of everyone having a comfortable middle class life were over. America, from now on, would be run this way:

* The super-rich will make more, much much more, and the rest of you will scramble for the crumbs that are left.

* Everyone must work! Mom, Dad, the teenagers in the house! Dad, you work a second job! Kids, here's your latch-key! Your parents might be home in time to put you to bed.

* 50 million of you must go without health insurance! And health insurance companies: you go ahead and decide who you want to help -- or not.

* Unions are evil! You will not belong to a union! You do not need an advocate! Shut up and get back to work! No, you can't leave now, we're not done. Your kids can make their own dinner.

* You want to go to college? No problem -- just sign here and be in hock to a bank for the next 20 years!

* What's "a raise"? Get back to work and shut up!

And so it went. But Reagan could not have pulled this off by himself in 1981. He had some big help:

The AFL-CIO.

The biggest organization of unions in America told its members to cross the picket lines of the air traffic controllers and go to work. And that's just what these union members did. Union pilots, flight attendants, delivery truck drivers, baggage handlers -- they all crossed the line and helped to break the strike. And union members of all stripes crossed the picket lines and continued to fly.

Reagan and Wall Street could not believe their eyes! Hundreds of thousands of working people and union members endorsing the firing of fellow union members. It was Christmas in August for Corporate America.

And that was the beginning of the end. Reagan and the Republicans knew they could get away with anything -- and they did. They slashed taxes on the rich. They made it harder for you to start a union at your workplace. They eliminated safety regulations on the job. They ignored the monopoly laws and allowed thousands of companies to merge or be bought out and closed down. Corporations froze wages and threatened to move overseas if the workers didn't accept lower pay and less benefits. And when the workers agreed to work for less, they moved the jobs overseas anyway.

And at every step along the way, the majority of Americans went along with this. There was little opposition or fight-back. The "masses" did not rise up and protect their jobs, their homes, their schools (which used to be the best in the world). They just accepted their fate and took the beating.

I have often wondered what would have happened had we all just stopped flying, period, back in 1981. What if all the unions had said to Reagan, "Give those controllers their jobs back or we're shutting the country down!"? You know what would have happened. The corporate elite and their boy Reagan would have buckled.

But we didn't do it. And so, bit by bit, piece by piece, in the ensuing 30 years, those in power have destroyed the middle class of our country and, in turn, have wrecked the future for our young people. Wages have remained stagnant for 30 years. Take a look at the statistics and you can see that every decline we're now suffering with had its beginning in 1981 (here's a little scene to illustrate that from my last movie).

It all began on this day, 30 years ago. One of the darkest days in American history. And we let it happen to us. Yes, they had the money, and the media and the cops. But we had 200 million of us. Ever wonder what it would look like if 200 million got truly upset and wanted their country, their life, their job, their weekend, their time with their kids back?

Have we all just given up? What are we waiting for? Forget about the 20% who support the Tea Party -- we are the other 80%! This decline will only end when we demand it. And not through an online petition or a tweet. We are going to have to turn the TV and the computer and the video games off and get out in the streets (like they've done in Wisconsin). Some of you need to run for local office next year. We need to demand that the Democrats either get a spine and stop taking corporate money -- or step aside.

When is enough, enough? The middle class dream will not just magically reappear. Wall Street's plan is clear: America is to be a nation of Haves and Have Nothings. Is that OK for you?

Why not use today to pause and think about the little steps you can take to turn this around in your neighborhood, at your workplace, in your school? Is there any better day to start than today?

Yay! We had our Baby boy Wednesday and got home from the hospital today.

Watching him now on Monitor kick his feet and wave his arms. His mommy is sleeping in his room, too. Nice to be able to see and hear him (thanks Mee Maw) in his crib (thanks Aunt Linda)! He's got lots more fun stuff in store (thanks everybody) as he starts doing more than eating and sleeping!

It's a lot more comfortable here at home--although hospital and all the staff were awesome.

One day, when I was a freshman in high school, I saw a kid from my class was walking home from school. His name was Kyle. It looked like he was carrying all of his books.

I thought to myself, 'Why would anyone bring home all his books on a Friday?
He must really be a nerd.'

I had quite a weekend planned (parties and a football game with my friends tomorrow afternoon), so I shrugged my shoulders and went on. As I was walking, I saw a bunch of kids running toward him. They ran at him, knocking all his books out of his arms and tripping him so he landed in the dirt. His glasses went flying, and I saw them land in the grass about ten feet from him... He looked up and I saw this terrible sadness in his eyes .

My heart went out to him. So, I jogged over to him as he crawled around looking for his glasses, and I saw a tear in his eye. As I handed him his glasses, I said, 'Those guys are jerks, they really should get lives.
' He looked at me and said, 'Hey thanks!' There was a big smile on his face.

It was one of those smiles that showed real gratitude. I helped him pick up his books, and asked him where he lived. As it turned out, he lived near me, so I asked him why I had never seen him before. He said he had gone to private school before now. I would have never hung out with a private school kid before.

We talked all the way home, and I carried some of his books. He turned out to be a pretty cool kid. I asked him if he wanted to play a little football with my friends . He said yes. We hung out all weekend and the more I got to know Kyle, the more I liked him, and my friends thought the same of him.

Monday morning came, and there was Kyle with the huge stack of books again. I stopped him and said, 'Boy, you are gonna really build some serious muscles with this pile of books everyday! He just laughed and handed me half the books.

Over the next four years, Kyle and I became best friends. When we were seniors we began to think about college. Kyle decided on Georgetown and I was going toDuke. I knew that we would always be friends, that the miles would never be a problem. He was going to be a doctor and I was going for business on a football scholarsip.

Kyle was valedictorian of our class. I teased him all the time about being a nerd. He had to prepare a speech for graduation. I was so glad it wasn't me having to get up there and speak .

Graduation day, I saw Kyle. He looked great. He was one of those guys that really found himself during high school. He filled out and actually looked good in glasses. He had more dates than I had and all the girls loved him. Boy, sometimes I was jealous! Today was one of those days. I could see that he was nervous about his speech. So, I smacked him on the back and said, 'Hey, big guy, you'll be great!' He looked at me with one of those looks (the really grateful one) and smiled....' Thanks,' he said.

As he started his speech, he cleared his throat, and began ...

’Graduation is a time to thank those who helped you make it through those tough years. Your parents, your teachers, your siblings, maybe a coach...but mostly your friends....I am here to tell all of you that being a friend to someone is the best gift you can give them. I am going to tell you a story.'

I just looked at my friend with disbelief as he told the first day we met. He had planned to kill himself over the weekend. He talked of how he had cleaned out his locker so his Mom wouldn't have to do it later and was carrying his stuff home. He looked hard at me and gave me a little smile. 'Thankfully, I was saved. My friend saved me from doing the unspeakable.'

I heard the gasp go through the crowd as this handsome, popular boy told us all about his weakest moment. I saw his Mom and dad looking at me and smiling that same grateful smile. Not until that moment did I realize it's depth.

Never underestimate the power of your actions. With one small gesture you can change a person's life.
For better or for worse, God puts us all in each others lives to impact one another in some way.

Sure. Some foggy patents were granted and based of those you can see a ghost in every room.

What I want to see is real innovation that isn't muzzled into a room of development and marketers to be strained out over years and years. (Edit I said "of torment" for users, but fact is users were being milked, usually and still without their knowledge--maybe they deserved it--fanbois certainly still do)

Now you have, and next fall you will, maybe, have mini computers that do most of everything you want. On your cellphone. Were it up to some, those innovations would have been stretched to the future.

Now hanging out in the parking lot of Snow Hill Lions club with Becky and Aaron. Had bbq chicken (dry rub) and baked beans. Yum.

Everyone else is inside participating in an auction. I think Jenny has won bid for putt-putt gift certificate. Pretty sure she has her eyes on a George Forman 3 breast grill. Think I saw a Seacrets Gift Certificate in there as well as one from Ponzetti's. Jerk Chicken and BBQ Chicken Pizza for dinner, perhaps?

Rare acceptance of suggestion to replace serpentine belt. Jenny's car, would kill me to have her stranded if it broke. Guess that's how they get us :) Taking a little more time than normal visit, but didn't slide over to Panera cause wanted to be around for questions/issues...

Seriously though, also one of rare times I need to tether. Doing a little work and some Pulse reading on the Gtablet. Not worth paying monthly for, and not eating up a ton of data either. When someone gets it right, they should earn a lot of business. Wait, isn't Sprint or Tmo (or is it T&A officially yet?) offering free tethering? Or is that one of the other carriers?

Alrighty then.

Settling in to new house. Jenny has let me play with PC... it died some time back and haven't been all that motivated to fix. Want to record ip camera though and upload to FTP and it's not that straight forward via a tablet or phone :) - afaik.

Stupid hard drives. I suck at installing anything. Haiku works but only in safe graphics mode and windows either can't find the disk, doesn't like the partitions, or fails on starting services. Somewhere something is sitting there with troll face. Problem?

Would help if I focused. Once again tablets or phone makes it just about unneccessary to worry with it. Crap, what is this that snuck on after Pawn Stars? I'd love to wonder around some of these people's ancient storage sheds and garages. Sans-spiders that is.

Not being able to sign in to seesmic or hootsuite is not a deal breaker, but is interesting to me. Enough to make post, obviously.

Can sign in online... and now on twitroyd... must have froze myself out (several different days?) With bad password guesses... twitrotyd seemed to fail tonight until I checked SSL though...

Just felt like fuming a bit. HTC replies to email and apoligizes for delay as they and Verizon are making sure the systems work. It also sounds like they're ironing out the details of what HTC will be required to update after release (just make sure CM can be installed!) ...

Anyway, it appears original email said they weren't going to buy the device now--because of the delays. And here is where I want to fume: Damnit, everytime a device is released and bugs and update details aren't worked out in advance almost everyone, and certainly me, criticize OEM and Cellular Co for not working it out before release. Yet this bonehead apparently whines that a device he or she hasn't paid for yet is now not going to get a chance because of the delays.

So HTC/Verizon: Take your time. Get it right. They will come.

I heard about this change and kinda rolled my eyes and wondered if it were really necessary, would it decrease ridership by stiffing the locals that depend on the bus, and so on.

Turns out to be a really great idea. Which is something you rarely associate with government decisions (although to be fair government, especially local government, does get it right more than we care to admit).

Anyway this one strikes me as ingenious even if simple. Especially when you consider the ticket system which can save you even more money. Buy a book of 20 tickets (20 one way rides or 6+ all day tickets) and pay only $15. (And you can buy them in greater bulk for greater savings.)

So, if you have to much to drink and need to get back to the hotel - it's $1 to board the bus. Heck, I'd give you a dollar for that! For those that pay $2 a day now to get to work and back only - then they can pay $1 per boarding and so it's still $2 for the day. (Of course if you stop at grocery store on way home it would have been better to spend the $3 for all day, but maybe there is a trade in for those that make this mistake... of course now we're talking a lot of little strips of paper-I hope it is biodegradable!) And if you want to bar hop via the bus - it's $3 all day.

Apparently there is a need to charge more to cover the costs. Whatever you think of reasons for cost increase are, $3 a day is still a pretty good deal for being scooted all around town for a 24 hour period. And the $1 per boarding option may turn out even better for some!

Memory

This isn't news to many, but a cheap, quick pick me up for a computer is buying memory. Use crucial.com (or any memory maker's configurator) and find the right memory for your computer. It's likely to be fairly cheap (except maybe on really old computers--I've seen rediculously high prices) and it's easy to install.
Now that you've seen what memory looks like, assuming you've looked online, open your computer and check how much you have. If there are no empty slots, check to see how big the memory you have is. A lot of times OEM's (Original Equipment Manufactures) will just put one or two small sticks in there. 256MB or 512MB. Again, assuming you've read to see what your computer can handle, add a stick or 2. If you have 2 512's either buy a 1GB stick and replace one, or buy 2 1GB sticks and replace them both! Even 1 additional gig will probably make your computer purr. It'll start up faster too.

Of course, if you have a newer computer it probably came with 2, 4 or even 8GB's of memory to start. Lucky you :)

As I was unloading my items on the conveyor belt to check out, a drunk standing behind me watched as I placed the items in front of the cashier.

While the cashier was ringing up the purchases, the drunk calmly stated -- 'You must be single.'

I was a bit startled by this proclamation, but I was intrigued by the derelict's intuition, since I indeed had never found Mr. Right. I looked at the six items on the belt and saw nothing particularly unusual about my selections that could have tipped off the drunk to my marital status.

Curiosity getting the better of me, I said -- 'Yes you are correct. But how on earth did you know that?'

The drunk replied -- 'Cause you're ugly'.

Hey, so the link is for a site I found subsequent to the fix. I couldn't find the original site that helped me in Chrome, and it was weird too...

Anyway. if you're on a mobile phone, hopefully you can still read this. Cause maybe the link I provided already took you to the site I linked. LOL. So not tested, but this is a neat thing for blogger that I have looked at a few times in the past without resolution.

Anyway, if you're signed in to blogger, go to draft.blogger.com and then you'll have an option to make a mobile version show up. Will it then let folks with these new fancy smartphones go to desktop version? (yes they do) I don't know yet. But having a mobile version is a good start. If people use it then maybe they will tweak it for the better. (Maybe it is already well thought out and implemented, I just know I may not revisit this issue for awhile so I am posting this now.).

I have seen grandma's probed, kids fondled, and cancer survivors xrayed.

We need to fix our procedures. These things should have been considered and addressed internally before implemented.

That said. Purely that it is a kid, grandma or person in a wheel chair does not make it Headline material.

If we're going to tolerate these screenings, and I don't know that we shouldn't stand up and say NO!, then we need to consider that they MUST be applied equally.

These knee-jerk reactions are the same kind of ignorant reactions that got us into this security mess.

Terrorists can still do umpteen thousand things to get to us. It's more of the tanks on the beltway mentality.

There hopefully are technological improvements that can be made to secure our mass transit. That should be our focus.

But so many places there are people rising up in arms over a grandmother being patted down, a handicapped person being searched, or a kid being checked...

Are these searches even thorough enough to detect a hidden bomb? Now, or eventually, probably not.

But that they are being conducted on these heart grabbing parts of our population is just yellow journalism and yellow citizenship. Elderly, handicapped, and kids have been used for attacks from terrorists. Percentage? Very small. But then again, you still have a better chance of being struck by lightening than being involved in a terrorist attack.

But if you are going to screen, and use procedures that are abhorrent, then you need to use them on all. Exceptions you make should be available to all.

Last Day to early vote in Worcester Co is Thursday Oct 29th. Go vote Democratic through the board. You can't get anything through without a set of democratic progressive representatives in office. Kratovil is the perfect Democrat in local politics because he has already shown he'll vote independent of party politics and votes for what is best for MD locally. i.e. he improved healthcare for Maryland children... Locally, he is at risk in this rediculous antiObama antisocialism antimuslim mess. Say what you want about national politics, but leave our best advocate alone. Kratovil for Congress!

I'm an extremely progressive advocate. Kratovil IS questioned by progressives. But he does what is right for Maryland. And he isn't against properly written progressive law nationally. It's just hard to read it all so fast and vote with a strong conscience, apparently. I don't think anything can be properly read at a federal level and voted on, but I do advocate strengthening Kratovil's office with more staff... Is that something supporters pay for or is it proportioned by census?

Chile

Thank God the Chile Mine situation turned out positive. In America we've had black lung (still paying for it) and other issues where companies that profit from employee harm don't always pay for it. Hell, maybe they damage environment, and nation at large and don't pay for it. But I don't have details and so none of what I have said so far means anything.

That said, mining has always been a tricky business, Putting people under hundreds of feet of earth is always tricky. It costs alot, and miners and/or companies have always considered the risks, including bringing down small birds so when they fall out, everyone knows to roll out. Other safety systems have also been put into place. But as we all know, safety can sometimes battle with profits.

American mines have addressed these concerns to the extent that they are required. And some have went farther than necessary. But have they all?

We've had our own issues but I don't know that they've all been covered by major media, or whether we know the extent.

So if you happen to stumble upon this, and want to comment, please do. How safe are American mines? What don't we know? I'd also like to know from folks who suffer or have family that suffered from black lung to chime in.

I'd like to add that I'm a supporter of renewable energy, which will have its own safety issues. And will have a detrimental effect on mining which provides a large part of our energy. Sure renewable energy is billed as a way to reduce dependency on foreign oil, but we should also consider our miners and mining towns while we consider our path... Chime in, please!

Hi Senator Mikulski. I'm still 100 percent behind you but I was walking around my neighborhood tonight and looking at so many nice houses that, while they've dropped in value recently, probably cost a good penny a few years ago. I'm wondering. $250,000 isn't what it used to be. Nor is the wage I make but let's not go there. Are my neighbors in the same position as I am? Hand to mouth almost? Maybe their mortgage is so high with fluctuation that they're feeling the crunch on their daily bills and groceries as are so many Americans. Are we not considering this when we talk about taxes that could balance the budget? Could we raise that rate some? I know it is hard to believe that a household making that much could be stressed, but I see so many cars in the driveways, maybe we should reconsider the break point--maybe so many people in some households make that wage seem higher for them.

I know that taxes for the "rich" are so low compared to the beginning of Reagan's term and previously, and I know that it has had an effect that all classes are complaining about--i.e. being so stressed with income and such-- but maybe the number should be looked at again, cause, really, maybe some of these folks are hurting as bad as those that make so little but yet still see so much that could be used for food taken from their income for taxes.

Just trying to find a middle ground here.

250K Sounds like alot

Lots of areas spiraled up their real estate. People are sitting on large morgages. People over report their income. Are my neighbors at risk due to that? Are they making 250K and hurting, their paycheck is in danger for food and etc? Is 250K too low for us to look at when it comes to tax rate? I think some upper middle folks are in danger, and for economc sanity we should consider them. Please President Obama, consider my neighbors. Especially during midterm elections. And forever. :)

It's not surprising that the rich would want to spend money so their rich colleagues and cohorts can take back the Congress.

What is surprising is the amount of middle class Americans willing to listen to the lies of the GOP and Tea Party and spew them on their signs and campaign material.

The GOP, almost all of them, are about big business (not even regular business, in reality). No one really knows what the Tea Party candidates will do but they all seem to be tapping into the anti-Obama sentiment.

Obama has done more for 90 percent of us than even Clinton did. He's turning around an economy that was raped by the right before he left office, and an economy and poelple that have been ignored by the right ever since.

The tripe spewed on Fox and at rally's , tripe paid for by money funding the Tea Party and folks who align themselves with the GOP has generally been fact checked to be bogus or at least too partisan to be believed. It's funded by the rich who are desperate to continue raping us all.

(You're welcome to check facts by a google search, but since you won't believe your own research, and stories ran by Fox are never checked, why should I go into the trouble to document my opinion to prove it).

Seems like you can find whatever you want to find on the internet though. Type in Obama is a muslim and you'll get plenty of results. I know good people I'm related to that still suck that up, even though to me it wouldn't matter if he was, and I'm sad to think that they are concerned about it.

If you listen to FOX, most of what you hear is a lie. I've been there and know that if they ever discount a lie, it is hidden somewhere that most likely no one will see it. Like the "Pimp" who exposed Acorn organization. Did you ever hear from Fox that it was a lie? No? Of course not.

Obama continues to fight for topics he ran on and I salute him for it. Just because so many looney's are running around spouting nonsense doesn't change his job. Sadly though, too many Americans are hearing and re-spouting the nonsense. I don't know if I should question our national mental health or not.

I'm really hoping those who believe in rational discourse and national sanity will get out and vote for the best candidate, republican, independent or democrat. I'll be voting for the best candidate, for sure - regardless of politics. But so many crazies will be out to vote that I hope many rational people will not be apathetic and get out and vote too.

So much money flowing into the GOP and the Tea Party. (Some arguments there, which of those crazies deserve the money? Well, which ever one that has their mouth firmly planted on the corporate fund, of course). Where is it all coming from? Surely not mainstream middle class Americans who want their COUNTRY to do better, not their PARTY.

Wow. Unemployment benefits are the enemy? Not the offshore tax havens? Not insider trading? Not no-bid contracts? Not war profiteering? Not the Wall Street upheavel that paid billions to the culprits, then got bailed out, then got re-bonused? You're killing me. You want to blame the poor? Unemployment? Wake up elite. We're sick and we're tired. Sell some homes, or follow Mr Buffets gesture and donate your wealth. After all, 5% of Americans own 95% of the countries wealth. And this is not by hard work alone. Not that you're all guilty, but the system is twisted and for whatever reason you have all done well. Your billions can't be spent when the people are tired of cake.

Edit: Aug 29 2010 Disclaimer: I work for a healthy small business that is taxed to death. Our owner has always concentrated on improving and growing his business. His business like many small businesses are providing many people (like myself) with a decent income and a good life. I'm frustrated that when the powers that be do their shifting that small businesses like ours are stuck paying the bill.

To all political parties: you're missing the big picture because you're ignoring middle America and their employers. There is just too much money at the top and it is the corporations and large trade unions that get your attention. But middle America is fed by the small businesses that are sick and tired of being ignored--and too often it seems like the conservative pitch is the one they most agree with. In practice they are trying to take care of their employees but they see the taxes they face and hear the liberal rhetoric against business and flock to the right. Not that the right will take care of them, it just sounds good. SO:

When middle America does well, America does well. Small and middle sized businesses should get the cuts, regardless of whether they have a strong lobby. (Small and middle businesses, you should stop listening to the US Chamber of Commerce. Their voice was long ago drowned out by the richest corporations.)

Look, it's hard not to get excited about the iPad or iPhone. It's fricking Christmas and new stuff is getting opened afterall.

So I'm excited for you folks getting an iPhone. Without doubt. Hooray and can I see it?

That said. It is all the things I dislike about Apple.

SO, For you folks who are Scrooges, I agree: Bah Humbug.

You can easily enough Google why to like, hate, or sit on the fence about the iPhone. (I might add links to easily Googled sites, but should I have to?)...

But bottom line, unless you're the guy who went from Android back to Blackberry, (why man why?) - what do you care? You're either on a phone phone (phone-phone is now licensed by casio) or a smart phone running Android. Or a couple other things that are just wondering how they missed this boat.

So I think and could be wrong pending litigation.

Anyway, I've said nothing and will continue to say nothing other than "You should get an Android device."

If you can.

If not: At least set your search engine to something other than bing. Otherwise, you'll just eventually go back to blackberry.

MAWA Weekend

My nephew wrestled this weekend at the MAWA Nationals and he rocked the mat to a 2nd place finish. I'm pretty sure he has many first place finishes ahead of him, but as for this weekend I was amazed by his grit. He never gave up and bridged out of some sure pins. Despite being down points and likely exhausted, he never gave in to what would have been less painful, a pin.... For me, it was better than a win, it showed real guts and perseverance even in the face of defeat. I'd take having his moxy over 1st place anyday.

Every Android phone should have the freedom for the owner to run with it... Motorola and Verizon started out on the right foot, but have apparently lost track of the consumer with 2.1. I don't know officially... perhaps Verizon really is courting Apple, because if you're going to use a locked down big brother device, you might as well go with the iPhone... it's kinda pretty, at least.

So anyway, we snagged some pizza and sandwices then went sledding again. The weather got too snowy to snap pics today though, so maybe some tomorrow on our way back to Erie. We're stopping by a really tall hill that has a moving sidewalk type lift... Oh, that's after we pick up our ceramic crafts we left for the kiln... lol, I painted a teapot for Jenny, it was fun! The kids painted and made wooden ships. Anyway, will take a pic of that too, tomorrow...
